The traditional whistle is made up of a cork ball which produces sound by vibrating inside the cavity.
Mr. Ron Foxcroft was an N.B.A. ran into a problem: he was booed by 18,000 people at the Olympic final in Montreal when a player elbowed a rival from the US team and was not penalised.
Foxcroft had seen the infraction and blew his whistle which, however, did not stop sounding; that cork ball inside was blocked and the whistle had lost its effectiveness. Hence the idea: to make a plastic whistle without a ball and with certain characteristics.
After various prototypes, the Fox40 was definitively born.
